Background
- Marilyn Stephenson’s
Checkerboard Bakery, which merchandizes individually
wrapped servings of cookies through approximately
20 retail businesses, has enjoyed sweeping success
as a home-based business. In the two years since its
founding, the business has grown from selling 75 packages
of cookies a week to somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000
per week. The bundles of high-quality confections
are each tied with a signature red-and-white checked
ribbon and displayed in wicker baskets at point-of-purchase
locations.
- About one-third of the 2,000 square feet of building
space will be set aside for a retail store, where
Stephenson also plans to sell the breads, pies, breakfast
rolls, and wedding and special-occasion cakes and
for which she has become widely known.
- The Checkerboard Bakery building and planned retail
storefront go hand-in-glove with Bremen’s recent
downtown revitalization project and its recent efforts
to recruit new businesses to Bremen’s historic
downtown district. Stephenson hopes to open the establishment
by the end of the year.
